Green Beans with Bacon and Onions

2 pounds fresh green beans
8 slices bacon
½ medium onion, chopped
1 ½ cups water

Wash beans and snip off ends. Leave beans whole or cut into pieces. In saucepan or skillet, over moderate heat, cook onions and bacon until bacon is almost crisp. Drain excess grease and add water and beans. Cover tightly and cook about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add a little more water if the beans should cook dry. Add salt to taste before serving.
