Recipe: Boston Brown Bread

1 1/2 cup seedless raisins
1 1/2 cup boiling water
1 cup sugar
3 tablespoons shortening
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
2 3/4 cup sifted flour
2 teaspoon soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup nuts

Place raisings in bowling water and simmer for 3 minutes. Set them aside to cool. Cream sugar, and shortening. Add egg and then raisins, and water mixture. Mix in in flour, soda, salt, vanilla, and nuts. Grease 4 tin cans (No. 2) size and flour. Fill cans 1/2 full. Bake at 350° for 45 minutes. Cool in cans for 5 minutes, then remove to cool on racks.
